Around 15 years back, I started with the idea of creating a word game in which a player could easily make words.
To accomplish this, I designed and developed the following features:
1) Separated the vowels ("a","e","i","o","u") from the consonants. A word is made from a small set (4 or 5) of consonant tiles and any
number of the 5 vowel tiles available in each turn.
2) A root word is made and placed at the left middle section of the game board. New words are built off consonant tiles already played OR
at right angles to a played word OR by extending a played word. This generates a word tree built on consonant nodes as the game
proceeds.
3) Defined an optimal set of consonant tiles (3 b's, 3 c's, 2 k's extra) such that almost all words (up to 19 letters in length) can be
built by a player.
4) Devised a scoring mechanism that gives a higher score: for a longer word OR for a larger extension to an existing word on the board.
Artikulate is articulate with a "k" (for knowledge). A person with a good vocabulary and raw knowledge also knows many
large (long) words and hence can rack up a huge score. The Artikulate Score which is the average score per turn is calculated at the end
of a game. Based on this score, an Artikulate Rating is provided to the player.
| Artikulate Score | Artikulate Rating |
|---|---|
| 39 or more | ERUDITE |
| 33 thru 38 | EXPANSIVE |
| 27 thru 32 | VERSATILE |
| 21 thru 26 | AVERAGE |
| 20 or less | EXPOSED |
The game is a great mental exercise for all ages. Artikulating will encourage the young mind to learn new words and gain knowledge. It would keep the adult mind sharp and lucid.
